Overall Goal and Project results: The project contributes to reducing landscape risks in Montenegro by strengthening cooperation among local stakeholders and improving institutional capacity for landscape fire management. Through targeted education and digital campaigns, it raises community awareness of landscape fire causes and impacts, while supporting the development of more effective local strategies for wildfire risk reduction. Capacity building is ensured through trainings for local authorities, environmental NGOs, and protected area managers on modern landscape fire management and community roles in prevention.
Scope and Beneficiaries: The project is implemented in the municipalities of Niksic, Savnik, and Pluzine, engaging local authorities, protected area managers, environmental NGOs, and local communities in landscape fire prevention. It supports education, field-based initiatives, and awareness-raising activities that empower communities to reduce unsustainable practices and actively participate in wildfire prevention and monitoring. Through collaboration with media, scientific experts, and digital platforms, particularly targeting younger audiences, the project also strengthens public responsibility and knowledge around sustainable fire management.
Activities: During the initial phase, the project established close collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Municipality of Niksic and the management of Piva and Dragisnica, Komarnica Nature Parks, ensuring coordinated implementation of activities. Public awareness was strengthened through the development of a project logo and slogan, alongside active media partnerships that provide regular visibility at local and national levels. During this period of implementation, a training on the role and responsibility of the community in reducing landscape fire risks was conducted for representatives of local communities, eco-tourism households, private forest owners, and farmers from the municipalities of Niksic, Pluzine, and Savnik. This was followed by a training session on “Open Area Fire Management – Prevention for Better Protection of Nature and the Community.” In addition, a workshop was organized, engaging community leaders, farmers, forest owners, and eco-tourism operators to discuss landscape fire risks, prevention measures, and sustainable land use practices. Also, the roundtable that was organized was attended by a large number of representatives from relevant local institutions, enterprises, local communities, and NGOs.
