FireGuard Network

Project summary: The project is implemented by the Association of private forest owners Bor and the Volunteer fire department Pozega as co-applicants. By networking NGOs, local communities, and public bodies implementing LFM in the City of Uzice and the Municipality of Pozega, the organizations aim to improve the LFM approach in these local areas, which directly addresses the overall goal by actively engaging local communities and relevant stakeholders in LFM activities, ensuring the safeguarding and maintenance of landscapes through collaborative efforts. Key beneficiaries include private forest owners, citizens in high-risk villages, state forest managers, volunteer and professional firefighters, local authorities, youth, universities, and environmental NGOs.

Implementers: Association of private forest owners, Bor

Partner:  Volunteer fire department Pozega

Overall Goal and Project results: The project aims to strengthen the connection between local communities and official bodies implementing landscape fire management (LFM) in Serbia through active civil society involvement.  The key achievements of the project include engaging citizens in mapping alternative equipment across five villages, which allowed the creation of an online database accessible to various regional stakeholders. Consequently, the project team prioritized activities that relied solely on their efforts and the active participation of local citizens. The establishment of a civil network of trained citizens in five remote communities in Uzice and Pozega, trained to conduct fire prevention measures, will ensure the sustainability of the project activities, and also the training of youth and their active involvement in the project implementation.

Scope and beneficiaries: The project’s beneficiaries include local communities in high-risk villages, private forest owners, state forest managers, volunteer and professional firefighters, local authorities, youth, environmental NGOs, and the business sector. They all benefit from improved fire prevention, faster and more coordinated response, enhanced training and equipment access, stronger cross-sector collaboration, and greater involvement in decision-making and regulatory processes for landscape fire management.

Activities: Activities focus on cataloging and mapping available firefighting equipment, providing training on safe fire suppression, promoting cross-sector cooperation, and developing regulatory proposals for forest firebreak standards. By facilitating networking, awareness-raising, and participatory exercises, the project enhances early response capacity, reduces fire risks for communities and businesses, and ensures more effective and coordinated management of forest fires in the Zlatibor District and surrounding areas.
