Community Fire Guardians: Empowering Youth in Landscape Fire Management and Digital Monitoring

Project Summary: The project was led by the Peer Educators Network (Rrjeti i Edukatorëve Bashkëmoshatar, www.ngo-pen.com) and fostered a culture of proactive wildfire prevention by engaging youth as active agents of change and strengthening local fire management capacities. Through interactive trainings, awareness campaigns, and the introduction of a real-time fire monitoring application, participants gained practical knowledge and tools to detect, prevent, and respond to landscape fires. By combining education, technology, and community-led initiatives, the project built long-term resilience, empowers young leaders, and promotes sustainable wildfire management across the region.

Implementer: Peer Educators Network, Pristina

Overall Goal and Project Results: The project empowered youth and local communities to take active roles in wildfire prevention and management. High school students are trained in Landscape Fire Management (LFM) practices, gaining the knowledge and skills to lead awareness campaigns and support early fire detection. The launch of a user-friendly Landscape Fire Monitoring application further strengthened community preparedness by enabling real-time tracking of fires. Through these activities, the project fostered active community participation, enhanced early response capabilities, and built long-term, sustainable capacity for effective fire management.

Scope and Beneficiaries: The project was implemented in Kamenica, Lipjan, and Suhareka, Kosovo, engaging youth, educational institutions, households, and local communities in wildfire prevention and landscape fire management. It brought together high school students, youth NGOs, local fire departments, emergency services, and municipal institutions to build awareness, practical skills, and coordinated action to reduce wildfire risks.

Activities: The project activities brought Landscape Fire Management (LFM) directly to high school students through six dynamic lectures. A total of 152 students learned about fire prevention, early warning systems, and the risks of uncontrolled fires, while also developing a sense of responsibility to protect their communities. Delivered by experts engaged by NGO PEN, the sessions sparked enthusiasm among students and teachers, laying the groundwork for future workshops, field activities, and long-term community resilience in fire management. By equipping youth with knowledge, confidence, and practical tools, the project fostered safer communities and a sustainable approach to wildfire prevention. The developed web Landscape Fire Monitoring application enables real-time tracking of fires and provides the possibility for fire reporting by citizens.
